There was a study conducted in the United States, which showed that 80% of the children between the ages of 8 to 15 are so addicted to their smartphones playing video games, watching videos, and/or browsing on social media. This overuse of smartphone came as a serious health concern by parents in the US. A study conducted in India showed by the time a child turns 14 they would have sent approximately 35,000 Text messages and approximately 30,000 whatsApp messages, this is to say the least an excessive use of the technology which is it at our disposal.
At a World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) held in California earlier this week the CEO of Apple Tim Cook made some remarkable announcements on the increasing concern amongst parents over the excessive use of smartphones amongst teens. He mentioned the company will feature an inbuilt app called Screen Time. This feature is integrated into the Do Not Disturb feature where it will stop notifications from coming from all the apps downloaded at night or the user can schedule a time range from which they do not want be disturbed by the notifications. Apple has also announced that parents can also control the usage of their children’s smartphone by locking certain apps for a specific period of time from their smartphone.
The CEO of Apple also stated in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States that they have launched the iOS 12 first Developer Beta version so, the developers can also make the apps, which can incorporate the Screen Time feature. This feature is likely to come to come to India after the public launch of iOS12, which is estimated later this year. There is no clarity on which line up iPhones will this be feature available.
There are several health specialists who were interviewed and have mentioned that they had patients having unusual headaches, dizziness, vision issues, and sleep disorders.
